Frequently asked questions
Getting started
What is TripRama?
TripRama is a 3D panner plugin. It puts any sound anywhere in the room around you, left and right, in front and behind, above and below, near and far, and moves it: orbits, swarms of copies, pitch-shifted voices and spinning echoes. It has five tabs (Space, Motion, Swarm, Pitch and Trip), 39 factory presets and 40 parameters you can automate in your DAW.
Which systems and plugin formats are supported?
macOS 11 or later, on Apple Silicon or Intel (one universal binary), as VST3 and Audio Unit.
Windows 10 or later, 64-bit, as VST3.
AAX (Pro Tools) is not available.
Is there a standalone app?
No. TripRama is a plugin and runs inside a DAW or another plugin host. Put it on an audio track, a group or a return.
Which DAWs does it work in?
Any host that loads VST3 plugins, or Audio Units on a Mac, such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro, GarageBand, Cubase, Bitwig, Reaper, Studio One or FL Studio. We test in Ableton Live. Please try the free trial in your own DAW before you buy, and tell us if anything misbehaves.
Do I need headphones?
Headphones give the strongest effect: height and front/back come through best there. On speakers, left/right and distance still work well. Switch the output mode (Headphones or Speakers) in the plugin to match what you listen on; Speakers mode uses gentler, mono-safe cues.
Installing
How do I install TripRama on a Mac?
Download the macOS installer from My licences (or from the trial page) and run it. It puts TripRama.vst3 in ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3 and TripRama.component in ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components. Then start your DAW and rescan plugins. TripRama shows up under TomaLab.
How do I install TripRama on Windows?
Download the Windows installer from My licences and run it. It puts TripRama.vst3 in C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3. Start your DAW and rescan plugins (in Ableton Live: Options › Settings › Plug-Ins, turn on Use VST3 Plug-In System Folders, click Rescan).
TripRama doesn’t show up in my DAW.
Check that the files are in the folders above, then rescan plugins in your DAW. For the Audio Unit, quit the host and open it again: macOS checks new Audio Units when the host starts. Logic Pro and GarageBand only use the AU version. Still missing? Send us a ticket with your system and DAW version.
Where are my presets saved?
On a Mac in ~/Library/Audio/Presets/TomaLab/TripRama. On either system, choose Show User Preset Folder in the plugin’s preset menu to open the folder.
How do I uninstall it?
Delete the plugin files listed above. Your own presets stay in their folder until you delete it. If you won’t use TripRama on that computer again, free the machine under My licences › Manage machines.
Free trial
Is there a free trial?
Yes. The trial is the complete plugin, not a cut-down demo. Create a free account, open the trial page, download the installer and sign in inside the plugin.
Does the trial need internet?
Yes, a little: during the trial TripRama checks in with our licence server once a day, so it works offline for up to 1 day at a time.
What happens when I buy after the trial?
Buy with the same account and your trial becomes a full licence. Nothing to reinstall, and your presets stay where they are.
Activation and licences
How do I activate TripRama?
Open TripRama in your DAW, choose Sign in and use your TomaLab account (the same email and password as on this site). The plugin checks your licence and activates. There are no serial numbers to paste.
How many computers can I use it on?
Each licence covers 3 computers that you own or use, on macOS or Windows, at the same time. Moving to a new computer? Free up the old one under My licences › Manage machines, then sign in on the new one.
It says I’m out of activations.
All 3 machines are in use. Free one you no longer use under My licences › Manage machines, then sign in again in the plugin. If you can’t reach the old computer any more, you can still free it from that page.
Does TripRama need to be online?
A paid licence works offline for 14 days at a time. After that it needs to check in with our licence server once; it happens on its own when the computer is online. During the trial the limit is 1 day.
Can I activate a computer that is never online?
Yes. In the plugin, choose offline activation and save the device file. On any computer with internet, sign in here, open Offline activation, upload the file and download the licence file. Copy it to the offline computer and load it in the plugin. It uses one of your 3 machines.
I forgot my password.
Reset it on the forgot password page. We email you a link to choose a new one. Then sign in again in the plugin.
Can I give or sell my licence to someone else?
Licences are personal and can’t be passed on without our agreement. If you need to move a licence to another person, send us a ticket.
Buying, updates and refunds
How much does TripRama cost?
€49. During launch it is €29. The final price, including VAT or sales tax for your country, is shown at checkout before you pay.
Who handles the payment and the invoice?
Our shop runs on Moonbase, our reseller and merchant of record. Moonbase takes the payment, handles VAT and emails you the invoice. Your licence appears in My licences straight away.
Are updates free?
Yes, all updates within the same major version (1.x) are free. Download them from My licences.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you bought on tomalab.app, ask within 14 days of purchase for a full refund, for any reason, whether or not you activated the licence. Refunds aren’t automatic: send us a ticket with your order number and the email you bought with. When the refund is made, the licence is cancelled on all computers. Details are in the refund policy.
I bought TripRama from a partner store.
For purchases from a partner store such as KVR Audio, MuseHub, Plugivery or Bandcamp, please ask that store about refunds; their own policy applies. For help with the plugin itself, we’re happy to help here.
Using TripRama
I can’t hear anything behind or above me.
Switch the output mode to Headphones and listen on headphones: on speakers, height and rear can only be suggested. Also check that Distance isn’t at 100% and that Mix is up.
My track sounds late or out of sync.
The Complex and Complex Pro pitch modes add latency. TripRama reports it to your DAW, so make sure delay compensation is on, or use the Beats, Tones or Texture modes.
It sounds thin in mono.
Use Speakers mode, lower Width and keep Swarm Spread under 180°.
How much CPU does it use?
One instance at 48 kHz uses about 1% CPU for plain panning, 4 to 7% with Swarm, and about 10% with every section on. Sections you switch off use no CPU. If the interface feels slow, set Animation to Reduced or Off in the gear menu; the audio is not affected.
